Your Design Job
You have got your first design job at ASU. Now, your manager wants your help in designing an infographic for freshmen students to show them on-campus resources.
Contents are provided, all you need is to apply Gestalt’s Design Principle and Color Theory to present the content.
Step One: Use Golden Ratio to Structure Content
Golden Ratio is great when it comes to layout. In our case, we have tile and contents. We want to use the golden ratio to structure the content and title.
Step Two: Choose the Right Color
As you have learned from our previous lesson on color theories. We can use yellow and red as the color for our infographic since not only it is ASU’s school color but it is also analogous color.
Step Three: Establish a Focal Point
Everyone is busy, they tend to care what matters to them. Therefore, they would not take the time to read your infography if you do not have a focal point to catch their attention. Therefore, we will establish a focal point as “Need Help on-Campus?”
Step Four: Common Region and Proximity 1+1 > 2
To organize our sub-topics such as listing out the useful resource on the ASU campus, it is better to use proximity to group the same type of information. For example, we can use yellow boxes to include titles to make the reader realize that each sub-title is inside a yellow box.
On top of that, we can use a common region to distinguish and repeat certain information. For example, the space between each yellow box should remain the same to help the reader identify the information.
Last Step: Devil in the Detail
Adding relevant icons help our audience understand our infographic better.
For example, on the title, adding a question mark and chat box can quickly help the audience understand this infographic is to help the audience clear their confusion of on-campus resources.
On top of that, in the first box “Need help with your paper?” It would be better to add a pencil icon to help the audience quickly realize this subtopic is writing-related.
